Define the work before comparing prices

Write a short scope describing the problem, desired outcome, location, access and timing. Send the same core information to each suitable provider so quotes can be compared fairly. Photographs can help with an initial discussion, but avoid exposing alarm panels, keys, family routines or valuables. Complex work usually needs an on-site assessment before either party can give a reliable final price.

Verify the person and relevant competence

Ask for the trading name, contact details and experience relevant to the exact job. Some work requires particular registration, certification or specialist competence, so check the current official register or regulator independently rather than following a link supplied in a message. Confirm insurance appropriate to the work and ask who will actually attend if subcontractors are involved.

What a useful written quote should cover

The defined work, materials, preparation and waste removal included.
Price basis, taxes where applicable and how unforeseen work will be approved.
Expected start, duration and any dependencies on weather or other contractors.
Payment stages linked to identifiable progress rather than vague dates.
Guarantees, certificates and completion documents that genuinely apply.

Check references with specific questions

Recent, comparable work is more useful than a general testimonial. With permission, ask a previous customer whether communication, timing, site care, final cost and defect resolution matched the agreement. Online reviews can provide context but should not be treated as proof on their own. Repeated photographs, identical wording across profiles or pressure to avoid written records deserve further verification.

Use proportionate payments and records

Understand what a deposit covers and avoid paying the entire price before work begins. Larger projects may justify staged payments after agreed milestones are inspected.
