How to Choose the Right Category for Your Online Ad
Place products, services, vehicles, jobs and property in the category buyers actually browse, with a simple decision process for difficult items.

Category choice is part of the advert, not an administrative detail. It determines which buyers encounter the page, which filters they can use and which specialist facts the listing asks you to provide. A misplaced advert may receive irrelevant views while remaining invisible to the people who actually need it.
First decide what kind of offer it is
Start with the main intent
- Product: a physical item, vehicle, equipment or other tangible good.
- Service: work, lessons, repairs, professional help or an activity someone provides.
- Property: a home, room, commercial space, land or other property opportunity.
- Job: a genuine employment opportunity from an eligible employer.
- Wanted or community post: a request or notice rather than an ordinary item for sale.
Describe what the buyer receives. A camera is a product; photography for an event is a service. A lawn mower is a product; lawn cutting is a service. A van is a vehicle; delivery using a van is a service. Choosing by the words in the title alone can be misleading, so focus on the transaction being offered.
Move from broad department to exact item
After selecting the main family, choose the narrowest active category that accurately describes the offer. A smartphone belongs under mobile phones rather than general electronics. A roof repair belongs under the relevant trade service rather than building materials. Do not select a popular category simply because it appears to receive more traffic.
Use the listing fields as a warning signal
If the form asks for details that make no sense, pause before continuing. Vehicle make, engine, mileage and NCT fields indicate a vehicle category. Service area, pricing method and qualifications indicate a service. Bedrooms and property type indicate property. Incorrect specialist fields create confusing public pages and can prevent publication.
Handle accessories, parts and bundles carefully
An accessory should normally use an accessory or parts category rather than the category for the complete product. State compatibility precisely and never imply that the main device is included when it is not. For bundles, use the category matching the main purpose and most valuable contents, then inventory the rest clearly.
What to do when no category is perfect
Choose the closest accurate Other option within the correct family, not a distant high-traffic category. Use an ordinary, specific title and explain the item or service in the description. If the marketplace repeatedly lacks a suitable category, contact support so the taxonomy can be reviewed rather than disguising the listing.
Check the public result before publishing
Read the category path from left to right and ask whether a buyer would reasonably browse there. Confirm that related listings would be useful alternatives. If a driving lesson appears among cars, or a phone case appears as a smartphone, the category is wrong even when the title itself is clear.
