How to Sell Used Workshop and Industrial Machinery in Ireland
Prepare lathes, drills, saws and fabrication machinery for sale with data-plate facts, operating evidence, guarding and removal logistics.

Used machinery is purchased as a working system, not a decorative object. Buyers need data-plate specifications, capacity, tooling, power requirements, guarding, maintenance, accuracy observations and a realistic removal plan. A machine can look clean while still requiring expensive electrical, bearing or control work. Sellers should describe only the tests they can perform safely and avoid claiming compliance, accuracy or suitability that has not been professionally established. Before publishing, isolate confidential production data, remove unrelated stock from photographs and decide whether the machine can be demonstrated in place.
Record the exact machine and electrical requirement
Photograph the manufacturer and data plate clearly, covering sensitive asset identifiers where necessary. Record model, approximate year, voltage, phase, power, speed range, capacity, table or bed size and machine dimensions. Note whether a transformer, converter, control cabinet, coolant system, extraction or compressed air is required and whether it is included. Do not describe three-phase machinery as easy to convert unless a competent assessment supports that claim.
Core specification record
- Transcribe plate information accurately.
- Measure floor footprint and overall height.
- List utilities and isolator requirements.
- Separate included controls from building infrastructure.
Show guards, controls and physical wear
Use wide photographs of every side followed by guards, emergency stops, switches, slides, tables, chucks, spindles, fences and wear surfaces. Disclose missing guards, damaged interlocks, backlash, oil leaks, corrosion, cracked castings and non-original electrical work. Never remove a guard to make the machine look clearer while it is powered. If the machine is sold incomplete or for parts, say so in the title and identify the absent components.
Condition evidence
- Photograph safety controls while powered off.
- Show repair welds and damaged castings closely.
- State observed backlash or play without inventing tolerances.
- Identify every missing guard and cover.
Define operating and accuracy evidence
State when the machine last performed ordinary work and what material or operation was involved. A powered spindle is not proof that feeds, brakes, coolant, digital readout and controls all function. If a competent operator performs a demonstration, keep people clear and use normal guarding. Accuracy measurements should name the method, setup and date. Historic claims from a previous owner belong in the background, not as current verified performance.
Useful test notes
- List each function actually demonstrated.
- Separate cold start from sustained operation.
- Explain the method behind any accuracy figure.
- Do not bypass interlocks for a sales video.
Inventory tooling and software separately
Tooling can represent a substantial share of package value. Photograph and list chucks, collets, holders, cutters, vices, steadies, change gears, manuals and measuring accessories. Distinguish original equipment, compatible third-party tooling and items shown but excluded. Remove customer files, network credentials, programs and personal data from digital controls in a way that preserves necessary licensed machine software. Buyers should know whether proprietary passwords, licences or service keys are transferable.
Package inventory
- Use trays or numbered groups for small tooling.
- State taper, shank and thread compatibility.
- Clarify software and licence transfer limits.
- Keep unrelated precision tools out of the frame.
Engineer the removal before agreeing the sale
Record machine weight from reliable documentation and inspect the route to the loading point. Measure doors, ceiling height, steps and floor limits, and identify whether anchoring, electrics, coolant or compressed air require competent disconnection. Agree who supplies lifting equipment, skates, forklift, crane or transport insurance. A low asking price does not make improvised lifting acceptable. Use written terms covering the exact machine, tooling, removal responsibilities and collection window.
Removal plan
- Survey the full exit route.
- Use rated lifting points and competent operators.
- Protect floors, services and nearby workers.
- Confirm cleared payment before removal begins.
The practical takeaway
A professional machinery advert combines specifications, honest condition, safe operating evidence, a complete tooling inventory and an engineered removal plan. That depth helps Irish workshops compare true installed cost rather than responding to appearance alone, while protecting the seller's premises and people during handover.
