Complete safety checklist before picking up a used car

A practical checklist you can use in one hour, from paperwork and road legality to title checks and test drive basics.

A quick buyer-first safety pass

A smooth handover starts before the phone call. Ask for title status, service records, and a written defect disclosure before arranging collection. If a seller cannot answer basic questions, pause and verify through a follow-up message before travel.

What to confirm on collection day

Registration details match the ad photos and previous listings.
Service history matches the mileage shown.
Vigorous test drive: cold start, brakes, indicators, lights and charging.
Road-legal documents are present before exchanging any cash.
All photos are reviewed against the item at hand in the same lighting if possible.

Keep communication in localads.ie messages until the transaction is complete. If in doubt, decline and move on; you are always free to walk away.

Check the car before money changes hands

Arrange to see the vehicle in daylight and ask that the engine is cold when you arrive. A cold start can reveal smoke, warning lights, battery weakness or unusual noises that are less obvious after the car has been warmed up. Compare the chassis number, registration and seller details with the documents, and use an independent vehicle-history service where appropriate. A current NCT is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the car's present mechanical condition.

During the test drive

Drive on both local roads and a faster road where safe and insured to do so.
Check that the steering remains straight and the brakes stop the car without vibration.
Test every window, light, lock, warning lamp and fitted safety feature.
Ask a qualified mechanic to inspect the vehicle when the value or uncertainty justifies it.

Agree the final price only after the inspection. Record the mileage, agreed condition, included keys and any known faults in writing. Use a traceable payment method when practical and never send a deposit merely because another buyer is said to be waiting. Before driving away, confirm insurance, motor tax obligations and the correct ownership-change process. If the seller, location or paperwork changes unexpectedly, pause the transaction rather than accepting a rushed explanation.
