How to Sell Unwanted Gifts in Ireland Without Misleading Buyers
Check returns first, describe packaging honestly, protect personal information and price an unwanted gift for a straightforward local sale.

An unwanted gift can be perfectly useful to another person, but unused does not always mean new. Packaging may have been opened, a seal may be broken, an account may have been linked or a warranty may not transfer. A straightforward advert explains those details without criticising the giver or inventing a retail history.
Check the return or exchange option first
A valid gift receipt or retailer exchange may provide a simpler outcome. Review the retailer's current terms, time limit and required condition before opening packaging or removing labels. Do not publish receipt photographs containing names, order numbers, addresses, barcodes or payment information.
Choose the correct condition
Describe what actually happened
- Unopened and sealed: the original seal remains intact and the box is accurately shown.
- Opened but unused: packaging was opened, but the item was not put into normal use.
- Tested: the item was switched on, configured or otherwise checked and should not be described as unopened.
- Used briefly: describe the use and any marks rather than presenting it as new.
Photograph packaging damage, missing inserts and broken seals. If the contents cannot be verified without opening the box, state that limitation. Do not use a retailer's catalogue image as the only photograph; buyers should see the actual item being offered.
Remove accounts, registrations and personal messages
Reset electronic devices and disconnect them from personal accounts according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check whether activation locks, subscriptions, digital codes or warranties transfer. Remove gift notes and labels containing personal details. A redeemed code or non-transferable service should never be advertised as available value.
Price below the complete retail alternative
A buyer comparing an unwanted gift with a retailer may value returns, delivery, full warranty support and certainty. Compare the exact model and package, then allow for private-sale limitations, packaging condition and any missing proof of purchase. A current sale price is a more useful reference than an old recommended retail price.
Be precise about receipts and warranty
State only what you know. A receipt may support the purchase date, but it does not automatically guarantee that a warranty can be transferred or used by another person. Direct buyers to the manufacturer or retailer for confirmation when terms are unclear. Share redacted evidence only when appropriate and never expose payment details.
Use the correct category and ordinary search language
List the item where buyers would expect to find that product, not in a general gift category. Use the exact item name, brand, model, size or colour in the title. Unwanted gift can be explained briefly in the description, but it should not replace the facts buyers search for.
Arrange the sale like any other private transaction
Allow inspection where practical, agree payment directly and use an appropriate handover method. Be cautious about buyers who introduce an unexpected courier or payment link. For posted items, agree packaging, cost and tracking before payment. Close the advert promptly after the gift is sold.
