How to Sell a Used Computer Monitor in Ireland

Describe the exact screen, show the ports and stand, explain what you tested and prepare a monitor listing buyers can assess before collection.

Two monitors of the same advertised size can suit very different buyers. One may be a basic office screen, another a higher-resolution display, and another a model designed for a particular gaming setup. A good second-hand advertisement identifies the actual monitor and separates its published specifications from the functions you tested. That makes the listing more useful to someone buying locally and helps prevent an awkward collection where the buyer expected a different connection or accessory.

Start with the exact model, not a marketing label

Find the complete model number on the monitor's label or settings menu. Use the manufacturer's information for that exact model when describing screen size, native resolution and available connections. Do not borrow specifications from a similarly named version. If you cannot verify a feature, leave it unconfirmed. Labels such as gaming, professional or 4K should not replace a model number and a clear explanation of what is included.

List the ports individually and photograph them in focus. HDMI, DisplayPort, USB and older connections have different roles, and a USB socket does not by itself prove that the monitor will charge or display video from a laptop. If you tested only one input, say which input and device you used. A buyer can then check their own computer and cables rather than assuming that every possible setup was demonstrated.

Make a clear, limited test record

Use an ordinary connected computer and the model's user controls to show a stable picture. Record what you observed rather than claiming factory-new performance. View plain light and dark images as well as ordinary text, and mention visible pixel defects, marks, uneven illumination or intermittent behaviour. Photographs can miss a small defect or exaggerate a pattern, so the description should explain what you actually saw. Avoid disassembling the display or attempting electrical repairs to prepare an advertisement.

Details buyers often need

  • Exact model number and the verified native resolution.
  • Which input was tested, with which cable and a brief description of the result.
  • Visible scratches, pixel defects, flicker or other observed limitations.
  • Stand condition, height or tilt adjustments you checked and any missing fixings.
  • Whether the correct power supply, power lead and signal cable are included.
  • Any repairs, prolonged storage or faults you know about.

Show the screen, accessories and condition

Take one photograph of the complete monitor on its stand, one of the powered-on screen and another of the rear connections. Add the model label and accessories as separate photographs. Do not display private documents, browser tabs, passwords or messages on the screen. Use neutral content. If the panel has a scratch, photograph it from an angle where it is visible instead of relying only on a bright desktop image that hides it.

Inventory the accessories before choosing a price. An external power adapter, original stand or mounting screws can matter more than a cosmetic mark, particularly when the buyer would otherwise have to source replacements. Do not describe an unrelated cable as original. Where an accessory's compatibility is uncertain, state that uncertainty and keep it separate from the tested setup. A screen sold without a stand should not appear in photographs as though a stand is included.

Compare like-for-like Irish listings

Look at the exact model where possible, then comparable size, resolution, age and condition. Allow for missing accessories, collection distance and the absence of a new-product warranty. A recently advertised asking price does not prove that an item sold for that amount. Choose an asking price you can explain and answer questions about the known faults consistently. Never describe a manufacturer warranty as transferable unless you have confirmed the applicable terms for this particular item.

An example monitor advertisement

Example only: 24-inch office monitor, exact model shown in the label photo. Tested with a laptop over HDMI using the included cable; text and ordinary desktop images displayed during the check. Light marks on the stand and a scratch on the rear casing. Screen condition shown in the powered-on photographs. Original stand and correct power supply included; other inputs not tested. Asking EUR 65, collection in Cork. Inspection welcome before purchase.

Use your own verified dimensions, model, observations and price instead of copying the example. If a fault is present, put it in the description rather than saving it for collection. An untested monitor is not the same offer as a working one, even when both turn on. You can still make an honest untested listing, provided it explains what is known and does not invite the buyer to assume a successful test.

Plan inspection and transport

Agree whether a powered demonstration is possible before the buyer travels. Show the included accessories and keep the agreed specification in the listing conversation. Pack the display so the panel is protected from pressure and the stand cannot knock into it; consult the maker's transport guidance where available. Confirm payment independently and close the listing once the sale is complete. A clear handover is the final part of an accurate advertisement, not an afterthought.
