How to Sell a Dining Table and Chairs in Ireland
Measure your dining set, document each chair, explain extension parts and organise collection so local buyers know exactly what they are getting.

A dining set can be an attractive local purchase, but its size and collection requirements often decide whether an enquiry turns into a sale. Buyers need to know more than how the table looks in your room. They need the measured dimensions, the number and condition of the chairs, which parts are included and how the set can leave the property. Preparing those facts before publishing saves repeated questions and reduces the chance of a buyer arriving with an unsuitable vehicle.
Measure the complete set
Measure the tabletop's maximum length and width, plus its height from the floor. For an extending table, record the closed and fully extended measurements and identify how many leaves are included. Photograph the leaves and any separate fittings. Measure chair width, overall height and seat height, and describe whether the chairs tuck under the table. Avoid giving a seating capacity as a guarantee: the useful space depends on chair size and how the buyer intends to arrange the set.
State the material only as precisely as your evidence allows. A wood-effect finish is not proof of solid wood, and a heavy tabletop is not proof of a particular species. Use a maker's label, receipt or verified product information where available. Otherwise describe the visible finish and construction without upgrading it to a premium material claim. If the set combines separately purchased pieces, say so rather than implying that every chair belongs to the original range.
Inspect each piece, not just the best chair
What to document before advertising
- Tabletop scratches, heat marks, water marks, chips or previous refinishing.
- Table stability, loose joints and any known damage around legs or brackets.
- Operation of the extension mechanism and the condition of every included leaf.
- Each chair's condition, including movement, damaged joints or missing fittings.
- Upholstery stains, tears, repairs or replacement fabric.
- Any differences between the chairs, such as finish, design or condition.
Do not describe the whole set as excellent if one chair has a significant fault. Number the chairs in your notes so you can connect each photograph with the relevant description. Do not test a visibly damaged chair by asking someone to sit on it. Disclose the issue and avoid advertising a potentially unsafe piece as ready for ordinary use. Clean using an appropriate method for the finish and fabric, without hiding wear under polish or a strategically placed tablecloth.
Take photographs that answer the collection questions
Use a clear photograph of the whole set as the lead image, then show the tabletop, chairs, underside and extension parts. Photograph meaningful defects close up. Remove personal paperwork and avoid including family members in the background. A tape measure in a photograph can support the description, but write the measurements in the advert as well. Buyers should not have to enlarge a blurry photograph to discover whether the table fits their room.
Choose a complete-set or separate-sale offer
Decide what the advertised price includes. If you want the table and all chairs sold together, say complete set only. If separate sales are possible, explain the individual prices and update the advert promptly when something sells. Compare furniture of similar dimensions, construction and condition rather than relying on an original retail price. A beautiful table with difficult access can require more effort to collect, and the buyer will reasonably consider that alongside the asking price.
An example dining-set listing
Example only: Rectangular dining table with four chairs. Table measures approximately 140 x 80 x 75 cm. Brown wood-effect finish; material not verified. Surface scratches and one mark on the tabletop shown in the photos. Three chairs have light wear; the fourth has a tear in its seat fabric. No extension leaves included. Asking EUR 120 for the complete set. Collection in Limerick from the ground floor. Buyer to bring suitable transport and help for lifting.
Change every measurement, price and condition statement to match your own furniture. If the legs are removable, confirm that you know the correct disassembly method and that the necessary fixings are present before promising easy transport. If you have not dismantled the table, say that. A realistic description of collection is more helpful than an unsupported claim that it will fit any car.
Organise collection without surprises
Explain whether the set is upstairs, whether access is restricted and what help you can genuinely provide. Measure the route through relevant doors or stairs before agreeing a plan. Do not publish an exact residential address in the public listing; share the agreed collection details privately with the buyer. Keep removable fittings together in a labelled bag, and let the buyer inspect the complete set before it is loaded. For glass or unusually heavy furniture, agree a suitable handling plan rather than improvising.
Confirm the item, price, collection time and included pieces in the relevant conversation. Verify payment through your own trusted account or agreed method rather than accepting a screenshot as proof. Once the furniture has been sold, close the advert so other buyers do not make plans around it. If the buyer does not arrive, update the arrangement honestly instead of marking the set sold or creating a duplicate advert to start again.
