How to Sell Used Luggage and Suitcases in Ireland
Turn an unused suitcase into a clear local listing with measured dimensions, honest wheel and zip checks, useful photographs and sensible collection details.

An unused suitcase can be valuable to someone preparing for a move, a work trip or a holiday. It is also easy to advertise badly: a photograph of the outside says little about the wheels, handle, internal condition or actual size. A useful advert answers those questions before a buyer contacts you. Start by choosing one bag you can inspect properly, then build the listing around what you can demonstrate rather than what the bag promised when it was new.
Identify the bag and measure it yourself
Record the maker and model if they are still readable. Explain whether the item is a hard-shell suitcase, soft-sided case, holdall or backpack, and whether it has two or four wheels. Measure its external height, width and depth with wheels and fixed handles included. If it expands, give the ordinary and expanded depth separately. State your measurement method so a buyer does not mistake the internal packing space for the full external size.
Avoid promising that a bag is accepted by every airline. Carry-on allowances depend on the airline, fare and journey, and the buyer should check their current booking. A measured description is more useful than a blanket cabin-approved claim. You can describe how you previously used the bag, but make clear that past acceptance is not a guarantee for someone else's flight. If you do not have a reliable scale, leave the empty weight unconfirmed rather than estimating it as a fact.
Check the moving parts before setting a price
A practical condition checklist
- Roll the empty case on a suitable surface and note sticking wheels, wobble or unusual noise.
- Extend and retract the telescopic handle, checking each locking position without forcing it.
- Open and close the main zip and each pocket, looking for damaged teeth or missing pulls.
- Inspect seams, corners, feet, carrying handles and the shell for cracks or loose parts.
- Look inside for stains, tears, missing straps, damaged dividers or lingering odours.
- Confirm whether any fitted lock works and whether its code can be changed using the manufacturer's instructions.
Describe a limitation in plain language. One wheel turns less freely than the others is more informative than minor wear. Do not conceal a cracked shell under a cover or call a handle fully working when it only stays up occasionally. If you cannot reset a lock, disclose that before arranging a viewing. A buyer may still be interested in a useful bag with an explained fault, but their offer should reflect the condition they will actually receive.
Photograph the interior as carefully as the exterior
Remove luggage tags containing names, addresses or contact details before taking photographs. Empty every pocket and follow the maker's care instructions rather than saturating the lining or adding a fragrance to mask a smell. Photograph the front, back, wheels, handles, open interior and model label. Add close-ups of material faults. For a set, show all pieces together and then photograph each one separately so buyers know whether their conditions differ.
Price a comparable bag, not its original ticket
Compare similar bags by size, brand, age and condition. A high original retail price does not establish the value of a used case with worn wheels or missing parts. Asking prices are not confirmed sale prices, so use several realistic comparisons and allow for uncertainty. Decide whether you want to sell a set together or separately, and state that clearly. If the price changes after inspection reveals a fault, update the existing advert rather than creating duplicates.
An example suitcase listing
Example only: Medium four-wheel hard-shell suitcase, blue. External size approximately 67 x 44 x 27 cm including wheels and handles, measured at home. Main zip closes, telescopic handle locks in both positions and all four wheels turn during an empty-case check. Scratches on the back and one worn corner are shown in the photographs. Interior divider and straps included. Asking EUR 30. Collection in Galway; buyer to check suitability for their airline and intended use.
Replace every detail in that example with your own evidence. Do not adopt its price as a valuation or its condition statement without testing your bag. A concise title combining item type, size and verified brand usually helps more than a string of travel keywords. Choose the closest available category and your actual county, then explain collection arrangements without publishing your precise home address.
Make the handover straightforward
Let the buyer inspect the bag and operate the wheels, handle and zips before completing the deal. Confirm whether the agreed price covers one suitcase or the whole set. Keep the agreement in the relevant listing conversation and verify payment through your own trusted route, not a link sent by a supposed courier. After the sale, close the advert so other buyers do not travel for an item that is no longer available.
