What Can I Sell Online in Ireland? A Room-by-Room Guide

A practical way to find saleable items around your home, decide what is worth listing and turn a clear-out into useful local ads.

Most homes contain useful items that are no longer being used: a phone replaced during an upgrade, a chair that no longer fits the room, tools left after a project or children's equipment that has been outgrown. The challenge is not finding anything to sell. It is deciding what another person could use, what can be described honestly and what is worth the time needed to photograph, list and hand over.

A room-by-room review keeps the job manageable. Take one box or clear surface with you, separate possible sale items from donations and recycling, and do not create adverts until the first sorting pass is complete. This prevents half-finished listings and helps you group related items into sensible bundles.

Start with the rooms that usually hold the clearest value

A practical home inventory

  • Living room: side tables, lamps, shelving, speakers, televisions, rugs and decorative pieces.
  • Kitchen: small appliances, cookware sets, coffee equipment, bar stools and unused storage units.
  • Bedrooms: wardrobes, chests of drawers, mirrors, desks, branded clothing and unopened accessories.
  • Garage or shed: hand tools, power tools, ladders, bicycles, garden machinery and leftover project materials.
  • Home office: monitors, office chairs, printers, keyboards, filing cabinets and networking equipment.
  • Children's rooms: age-appropriate toys, books, bicycles, clothing bundles and equipment that remains safe and complete.

Use a four-question test before creating an ad

First, can the item be identified accurately? A model number, maker's label, dimensions or original receipt can turn a vague object into something buyers can compare. Second, can you show its present condition? If it cannot be tested, say so. Third, can it be collected, delivered or posted safely? Finally, is the likely value worth the effort? A low-value item may work better as part of a clearly described bundle.

Usually better to donate or recycle

  • Items subject to a safety recall or with a known dangerous fault.
  • Heavily damaged goods whose repair cost is likely to exceed their useful value.
  • Opened, expired or unsuitable personal products.
  • Items you cannot lawfully sell or cannot identify well enough to describe responsibly.

Choose individual listings or useful bundles

List higher-value items separately because buyers search for their exact type, brand or dimensions. Bundle lower-value items only when they serve the same purpose, such as a set of gardening tools, children's books for a similar age or matching kitchen equipment. A mixed box described only as miscellaneous asks the buyer to do too much detective work and is difficult to price.

Prepare the facts buyers need

Write down the brand, model, size, age, included accessories, known faults and collection requirements before opening the listing form. Clean the item without disguising wear, photograph it in natural light and include close-ups of labels and defects. For large furniture, measure the widest points and note whether it dismantles. For electronics, remove personal data and photograph the charger or accessories that are included.

Turn the shortlist into live local listings

Create the strongest advert first rather than publishing everything at once. It establishes a repeatable approach for titles, photographs and buyer messages. Select the most accurate category and county, use a realistic price based on comparable condition, and explain collection or delivery clearly. Local Ads keeps enquiries direct between buyer and seller, so both sides can agree inspection, handover and payment arrangements themselves.
