A classified ad has one practical job: help the right person decide whether to contact you. It does not need slogans, excessive capital letters or every related keyword. It needs the exact item or service, evidence of condition, an understandable price and enough location or delivery information for the buyer to judge the next step.
Free publication does not make preparation unimportant. Buyers compare several results quickly, and an incomplete advert can create low-quality messages or no response at all. Ten careful minutes spent on the title, category and first photograph often save far more time later.
Start in the most accurate category
Choose whether you are advertising a product, service, property, job or another supported listing type before writing. Then select the narrowest accurate category. A driving lesson is a service, not a car; a room to rent belongs in property, not household furniture. Correct placement connects the advert to relevant filters and prevents buyers from encountering unsuitable fields.
Build a title from facts buyers search
A reliable title formula
- Item or service type.
- Brand and model when relevant.
- One defining detail such as size, material, year or condition.
- County or locality only when it adds useful context.
Examples include ‘IKEA MALM six-drawer chest - good condition - Cork’, ‘Beginner guitar lessons in Galway City’ and ‘Double room to rent in Dublin 7’. Avoid generic titles such as ‘Great bargain’, and do not add unrelated brands merely to appear in more searches.
Use the opening lines to answer the main question
Start by naming what is offered and its present condition or availability. The first sentence should make sense without the title. Follow with the most important specification, inclusion or restriction. Do not bury a serious defect, collection-only requirement or service qualification at the end.
Describe condition with observable evidence
Details that create a useful advert
- Age, model, dimensions, capacity or specification where relevant.
- What was tested and what remains untested.
- Visible wear, damage, repairs and missing parts.
- Accessories, documents or components included.
- Reason for sale when it helps explain timing or condition.
- Collection, delivery, postage or service-area arrangements.
Use ordinary language. ‘Small scratch on the right door, shown in photo five’ is more useful than ‘minor age-related marks’. If you do not know a fact, say so rather than guessing. Never copy a manufacturer's description in place of explaining the actual item being sold.
Set a price buyers can understand
Compare the same model or service scope in similar condition and location. A retailer price may include warranty, returns, installation or delivery that a private advert does not. Choose a fixed price, from-price, hourly amount or quote model that fits the category. Explain what the amount includes and avoid ‘price on request’ when a clear figure is reasonably available.
Make the first photograph earn the click
Use an original, well-lit image showing the complete item or a truthful view of the service. Add different angles, model labels, included parts and faults. Remove addresses, documents, faces and unrelated valuables from the background. Do not rely on stock images, screenshots or text-heavy promotional graphics when buyers need to inspect condition.
Add location without giving away privacy
Choose the correct county and a useful locality. For portable items, say whether a public meeting is possible. For furniture, explain collection access. For services, state the coverage area and whether work is remote, at the provider's location or at the customer's location. Keep exact residential coordinates and addresses private until an appropriate arrangement is confirmed.
End with a straightforward next step
Invite buyers to send a message or use the permitted contact method, and tell them which useful information to include. A seller of furniture might ask what vehicle will be used; a service provider might request the county and preferred date. Avoid pressure tactics, artificial deadlines and promises that cannot be verified.
Review the advert as a buyer
Final publication check
- The title identifies the exact offer without keyword stuffing.
- The category and listing type are correct.
- The price and what it includes are clear.
- Photographs show the actual condition and important faults.
- The county, locality and handover method are accurate.
- Private information is absent from text and images.
- The advert explains how an interested buyer should respond.
After publishing, answer genuine questions and add repeated missing details to the advert. Update availability when an item is reserved and close the listing promptly after it is sold. Do not create duplicate ads to manufacture visibility. A current, accurate page gives buyers a more dependable experience and protects your time.
Write for people first and search second
Search engines and marketplace filters both benefit from specific language, but repetition does not create quality. Use the terms a real Irish buyer would use naturally, support them with facts and link the advert to the correct location and category. No wording can guarantee a top position; complete information can make the page more relevant and more useful when it is discovered.
