Less to move, clearer decisions

Sell Your Things Before Moving House in Ireland

Moving gives you a reason to decide what deserves a place in your next home. Start with items you can release early, then create a separate, useful advert for each sale. Local Ads lets you post standard listings for free without committing to paid promotion.

Free standard listing. Optional paid promotion. Buyers contact you directly; you agree payment and handover.

A direct selling plan

Prepare a useful advert in three steps

01

Sort before you photograph

Separate items to keep, sell, give away or dispose of appropriately. Only advertise items you own or have permission to sell.

02

List in a sensible order

Start with things you no longer use. Keep essential furniture and appliances until your actual handover plan allows you to release them.

03

Make collection dates explicit

Tell buyers when an item can be collected. Leave time for missed appointments rather than relying on every sale completing on moving day.

Avoid the everything-must-go advert

A single advert containing a sofa, laptop, bicycle and washing machine is difficult to categorise and difficult for buyers to price. Give unrelated items their own adverts so each appears where interested people look. A coordinated dining set can be one bundle if the price covers the whole set.

Keep a simple record of each item, asking price, promised collection time and whether the sale is complete. Update or close the advert when it is no longer available so people do not make arrangements for something already collected.

Use your deadline without creating pressure

State a real collection deadline rather than making exaggerated urgency claims. Price according to condition and comparable items, then decide in advance when you will review the price or consider giving a usable item away.

Do not publish travel dates, key arrangements or details that reveal an empty home. Discuss precise collection arrangements privately. If an item remains unsold, use an appropriate donation or disposal route rather than assuming a listing guarantees a sale.

What your advert should include

  • A separate title, category and clear price for each item or genuine bundle.
  • Measurements and condition photos taken before packing.
  • Earliest collection date and any firm collection deadline.
  • Access details for bulky items without publishing your full address.
  • A fallback plan if an item does not sell before you move.

Common seller questions

How early should I start listing before a move?

Start once you know which items you can release and when. Allow time for questions, inspections and changes of plan. There is no guaranteed selling time, so keep a backup plan for your moving deadline.

Should I put my full address in the advert?

Use your county and locality publicly. Share precise collection details privately when appropriate, rather than publishing your address or access instructions.

Can I post several free adverts?

Standard listings are free. Create genuine adverts for distinct items, follow the marketplace rules and avoid duplicate adverts for the same item.
